Profile in purpose: Faced with type 1 diabetes and cancer, he chose triathlon instead
Nick Glover
Born on the Isle of Man, 1977. Nick grew up playing football, like most young boys; growing up stout and with good reflexes.
However, adversity struck when he was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 14. From henceforth, it was weeks in the hospital at a time, followed by several years of getting used to the adjustment of living with such a condition.
He had a close encounter with death at age 18 when his condition turned into Diabetic Ketoacidosis; a life-threatening complication that occurs mainly in patients with type 1 diabetes.
Needless to say, he survived. However, this also meant that his teenage years, up to his 20s, he was prone to injuries – many broken bones, hernias and accidents. More than 10 surgeries, in all.
The most major of which was for testicular cancer. More surgeries and months of hard chemotherapy were to follow.
He fought and won the battle again.
Today, Nick is an accomplished triathlete. Diabetes does not get in his way, and his cancer did not relapse. He lives his life and savours his moments of victories.
To help him, he uses an app called HALZA to monitor, track and manage his health. Through HALZA, Nick has managed to live his life, manage his condition and go through his training regiment.
Nick finished the Dubai 70.3 Ironman in a spectacular time of 5 hours and 8 minutes.
Purpose is honoured to have Nick wore our Purpose | BESPOKE Victory Elite Racing tri suit to take on this race.
Every day is tough, but every day is also a day for us to smile for the people around us.
That is Nick’s purpose.
